SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team completed its first conference sweep over UAB with a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
The Roadrunners improve to 12-11 on the season and 3-0 in conference, while the Blazers fall to 8-15 overall and 0-3 in C-USA action.
Bailee Baldwin hit a bunt single to get on base in the first. Freshman Kindell Brooks followed with a two-run homer to put the Roadrunners on the board. Riley Grunberg and Victoria Villarreal were both walked, but a strikeout and a flyout to center field left them on base at the end of the inning. UTSA led 2-0 after the first.
Both teams had a 1-2-3 inning in the second and posted a hit and left two on in the third.
In the top of the fourth, Clem was hit by a pitch and Stancil singled to third base, then runners advanced on a passed ball. Frazier reached on a fielder's choice as Clem scored for the Blazers. A single from Blount advanced runners again as Stancil score, tying up the game at two.
In the bottom of the frame, Hailey Garza hit a double to left field. She then stole third on a wild pitch. Celeste Loughman hit a single over the shortstop's head, scoring Garza. Baldwin was walked as Loughman advanced to second. Brooks followed with a single up the left side to advance runners. Baldwin got into trouble between second and third, but Loughman pushed forward and reached home as Baldwin made it safely to third. The Roadrunners led 4-2 at the end of the fourth.
There were zeros across the board until the bottom of the seventh. Blount singled to the shortstop and England reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on a throwing error. Hegh singled down the third base line and also advanced to second on a throw as Blount scored.
Clarissa Hernandez picked up her fifth win of the season allowing just four hits and two runs, while throw three strikeouts.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday when they host Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.
