BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 86-70 Saturday afternoon at the FAU Arena.
The Roadrunners (6-17, 1-10) shot 32.4 percent from the field and outrebounded the Owls (5-19, 2-9) 54-34.
The first quarter started out close until Florida Atlantic went on an 11-0 run to take the lead, 16-6. Both teams continued to find the basket, but the Owls kept the lead (24-12) going to the second.
In the second quarter, the Roadrunners went on a 9-0 run to come within five (31-26) with 2:37 remaining. The Owls followed a 7-0 run the final two minutes to lead 38-26 going to the half.
UTSA outscored FAU 22-19 in the third and posted four steals, but it wasn't enough as the Owls continued to score.
In the fourth quarter, the Roadrunners came within five (58-61) when Marie Benson scored at the 7:09 mark, but FAU went on an 11-0 run in the final minutes to secure the win.
Marie Benson posted her 13thdouble-double of the season to increase her career record to 26, just six away from the school record.
Tija Hawkins posted her 17thdouble-digit scoring game, scoring 18 points against the Owls.
The Roadrunners return to action on Feb. 14 when they host Southern Miss for the pink game. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
