DALLAS — UTSA senior Vincent Perez has been named Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Perez won the weight throw with a career performance at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Saturday in College Station. The senior measured 19.49 meters (63-11 ½) to finish ahead of Sam Meece of Cincinnati and Texas A&M's Gabriel Oladipo in the 17-man field. It was his second victory in the event this season, as Perez also grabbed gold at the FasTrak Invitational with his previous PR of 18.67m (61-3) on Jan. 19, and he also has posted a pair of runner-up showings in 2019.
The San Antonio Marshall High School product's new personal-best mark moved him into second place on UTSA's all-time performers list in the weight throw, as he trails only his older brother, Victor, who set the school record of 19.63m in 2017. Perez currently ranks second in Conference USA and 48th nationally in the event.
This marks the second straight week that a Roadrunner has been honored by the conference office, as Gary Haasbroek and Danielle Spence swept C-USA Field Athlete of the Week accolades on Jan. 29.
The Roadrunners will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 8, at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
