LAFAYETTE, La. — Chad Sewell posted his second career top-five finish to lead the UTSA men's golf team to third place at the Louisiana Classics, which concluded Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,866 yards).
Sewell tied for fourth place with a 1-under-par 215 to help the Roadrunners finish third in the 15-team field. UTSA carded an 879 for the bronze behind McNeese State (863) and No. 26 Illinois (870), finishing two shots ahead of Kent State and four in front of UMKC. It marked the program's highest finish at the tournament in a dozen trips.
After opening the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 69 Monday morning, Sewell posted back-to-back 73s. The sophomore from Conroe recorded four of his team-high 11 birdies in Tuesday's final round on the way to his third career top-10 finish while matching his UTSA-best finish of fourth.
Michael Rome also finished in the top 10, as the sophomore ended up in a four-way tie for ninth place at 2-over 218. The Austin Westlake High School product posted a 74 on the strength of a pair of birdies on the back nine in the final round after turning in back-to-back 72s to earn his second career top 10.
Competing as an individual, Collin Clark joined the sophomore tandem in the top 10 by tying with Illinois' Bryan Baumgarten for runner-up honors. The junior from Mansfield registered his second straight 3-under 69 behind four birdies to close out a personal-best 4-under 212 and match his career-best finish, tallying his fourth career top 10 in the process. Clark finished just one shot behind individual medalist Blake Elliott of McNeese State.
Sean Meehan matched Rome with a final-round 74 Tuesday and move into a tie for 45th with a 225 (74-77-74).
Adam House finished one shot back of Meehan and in a tie for 49th with a 226 (78-72-76) and Christian Fanfelle rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 55th (74-76-77—227).
The Roadrunners will return to action March 11-12 when they travel to Laredo for the Border Olympics.
