Houston, Gonzalez lead UTSA to seventh at ICON Invitational

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Julie Houston and Ana Gonzalez finished in the top 20 to lead the UTSA women's golf team to seventh at the ICON Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at The Woodlands Country Club's Tournament Course (par 72/6,392 yards).

Houston tied for 14th place and Gonzalez finished in a tie for 19th to help the Roadrunners post an 890 and finish one shot ahead of North Texas and four in front of Texas Tech in the 15-team field. UTSA turned in a 1-over-par 289 in the final round, a 15-shot improvement from the opening round, and ended up just seven strokes out of a fifth-place tie between No. 18 Clemson and Texas A&M.

Houston and Gonzalez each carded an even-par 72 in the final round, while Hannah Holzmann registered the Roadrunners' low final round with a 2-under 70.

The lone senior on the roster, Houston was steady with 16 pars and a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole in the final round. The Allen native and reigning Conference USA champion tied for 14th at 4-over 220 (76-72-72) for her fifth top-20 showing of the season.

Gonzalez posted her 72 on the strength of a five-hole stretch on the back nine that saw her write down four birdies. The sophomore from Monterrey, Mexico, tied for 19th with a 221 (75-74-72), her fifth top 20 of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Holzmann recorded five birdies, four coming as part of a 4-under 32 on the front, en route to her 70. The freshman from San Antonio finished tied for 30th with a 224 (77-77-70).

Madison Kidd was one shot behind Holzmann in a tie for 37th with a 225 (76-74-75), and Katia Mexsen rounded out the UTSA lineup in 67th (77-79-79—235).

No. 33 Houston captured the team title with an 872, followed by No. 27 Purdue (875) and ninth-ranked Kent State (876).

Clemson's Alice Hewson won individual medalist honors with a 9-under 207 (70-68-69).

The Roadrunners will return to the course March 11-12 when they travel to St. George, Utah, for the BYU at Entrada Classic.
