Roadrunners sweep Rhode Island and Maine

HAMMOND, La. – The UTSA softball team swept Rhode Island and Maine on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Cardinal Classic.
 
Game 1 – vs Rhode Island
Four runs in the third pushed the Roadrunners past Rhode Island 4-0 Saturday morning.
 
The Roadrunners scored the four runs on seven hits and an error.
 
Through the first two innings, the Rams had one hit and left two on base, while the Roadrunners had two hits and left three on base.
 
Madison Nelson pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Celeste Loughman singled to the pitcher, then stole second. Bailee Baldwin singled to the right side and also stole second as Loughman scored. Riley Grunberg doubled down the left line as Baldwin scored, increasing the score to 3-0. Elexus Trenkle reach on an error and advanced to second as Victoria Villarreal scored. The Roadrunners led 4-0 going to the fourth.
 
In the final two and a half innings, Rhode Island had two more hits and left three on base. UTSA had two more hits, a single from Loughman in the fourth and a single from Paige Pacher in the sixth.
 
Game 2 – vs Maine
The Roadrunners improved to 8-6 on the season after a 3-0 defeat over Maine Saturday evening.
 
A triple from Paige Pacher in the second put the Roadrunners on the board. Celeste Loughman followed with a single, scoring Pacher. UTSA led 2-0 after the inning.
 
In the third, each team had one hit and left runners on base. The fourth was a 1-2-3 inning for the Roadrunners and the Black Bears.
 
UTSA tacked on another run in the seventh off a double from Victoria Villarreal and an error that advanced runners.
 
The Roadrunners allowed just five hits from Maine.
 
UTSA returns to action tomorrow to take on Lamar at 11:30 a.m.
