Women's basketball falls in overtime thriller

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team fell short Marshall 79-72 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
 
Tija Hawkins posted a career-high 26 points as the Roadrunners (6-15, 1-8) shot 37 percent from the field.
 
The Roadrunners started the game off with a 4-0 lead. A 3-pointer from Karrington Donald at the 3:24 mark took the lead to five, 12-7. Back-to-back layups from Marshall (13-9, 7-2) brought the score within one until a 3-pointer from Marie Benson increased the score to 15-11. The junior also posted her 600thcareer-rebound with 17 seconds remaining, becoming the eighth Roadrunner to reach this milestone.
 
In the second quarter, the Roadrunners went on a 10-0 run to increase the score 25-15. UTSA shot 54.5 percent from the field and led 30-19 at the half.
 
The Thundering  Herd entered the third quarter with a 4-0 run to bridge the gap to seven (38-31), but two free throws from Marie Benson helped UTSA bump the lead back to nine, 40-31. The Roadrunners led 45-38 going to the fourth.
 
The fourth quarter started with a jumper from Tija Hawkins as UTSA led 47-40. Marshall came within two from a 3-pointer at the 8:25 mark. Karrington Donald scored at the 4:53 mark to being the lead back to five (54-49). The Roadrunners remained in the lead until the 20 second mark when a 3-pointer from the Thundering Herd tied the game at 64. Both teams battled for the ball and continued to score until the final buzzer. The game was tied at 66 at the end of regulation.
 
In overtime, Marshall outscored UTSA 13-6 to capture the victory. The game was tied three times in the extra period, but five free throws from the Herd ended the game.
 
The Roadrunners return to action Feb. 7 at FIU. Tipoff is set for 10 a.m. CT.
