Roadrunners open competition at Charlie Thomas Invitational on Friday

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The UTSA track & field teams opened competition Friday with a handful of performances at the Charlie Thomas Invitational at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
 
Chase Whiting led the Roadrunners with an eighth-place finish in the women's pentathlon. The junior from Fredericksburg scored 3,140 points to establish a new personal record in the five-event competition. She opened with a 9.17 clocking in the 60-meter hurdles, just .01 seconds off her personal best, and turned in a PR in the shot put with a mark of 9.74 meters (31-11 ½) to highlight her day.
 
In Friday's light schedule of events on the track, UTSA saw a trio of men compete in the 5,000m, led by Josh Rodriguez, who finished ninth in 15:35.64.
 
Meanwhile, Abby Balli clocked a 19:04.62 for 14th place in the women's 5,000m.
 
The Charlie Thomas Invitational will resume at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
