SAN ANTONIO – After opening the 2019 season over the weekend with a three-game series vs. McNeese State, UTSA will continue a homestand with its first midweek test of the year, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. The game will be streamed live on CUSA.tv.
UTSA (1-2) will face off with the Islanders (2-1) in its first midweek challenge of the year. The Islanders will be playing their fifth game in as many days after opening the year with four games vs. Texas-Arlington in Corpus Christi.
Last weekend, UTSA posted a 5-2 win on Sunday to salvage the three-game series vs. McNeese State, who posted wins on Friday and Saturday to open the season. The Roadrunners hit .232 as a team over opening weekend, slugging .358 and reaching base at a .359 clip. UTSA owned a 7.67 team ERA in 27 innings, allowing 30 runs on 31 hits, walking 12 and striking out 26, allowing seven homers.
UTSA was led at the plate by junior infielder Griffin Paxton, who was 4-for-10 with a double, three RBI and three walks without a strikeout. Jonathan Tapia, a sophomore centerfielder, had two steals and a pair of hits. Dylan Rock and Bryan Arias each had three hits over the weekend. Catcher Nick Thornquist hit a homer, along with senior outfielder Ryan Stacy.
UTSA used the weekend rotation of senior righty Karan Patel (0-1, 1.80 ERA) on Friday, senior southpaw Bradley Griggs (0-1, 40.50 ERA) on Saturday and senior righthander Palmer Wenzel (1-0, 1.50 ERA) on Sunday. In relief, Slater Foust worked 4.2 innings with three hits and one walk, striking out four. Cameron Carver earned a three-inning save on Sunday in his NCAA debut.
