SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 70-45 decision to Southern Miss Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (6-18, 1-11) shot 33.3 percent from the field, while the Lady Eagles (14-11, 6-6) shot 53.2 percent.
USM started the first quarter on an 8-0 run until Tija Hawkins made a layup off an offensive rebound to put the Roadrunners on the board. Back-to-back shots from Kourtney Kekec and Hawkins brought UTSA within three, 6-9. Southern Miss followed with a 6-0 run to increase the lead to 10 (7-17). Marie Benson scored at the 1:38 mark as the Lady Eagles led, 19-13 until Karrington Donald scored with just over a minute remaining to bring the score to 15-19 going to the second quarter.
Southern Miss shot 52.6 percent from the field in the second as it led 39-23 at the half.
In the third quarter, both teams shot over 50 percent as the Lady Eagles outscored the Roadrunners by one, 14-13. Ryann Stearns and Karrington Donald each had four points in the quarter.
UTSA scored nine points in the final three and a half minutes of the game as Charlotte Ellmore made a 3-pointer at the 3:24 mark of the fourth quarter. Donald followed with a layup at the 2:05 mark, while Stearns scored the final four points for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they host Louisiana Tech. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
