TUCSON, Ariz. — The UTSA men's golf team moved up three spots into 10th place on the final day of the Arizona Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Tuesday at Sewailo Golf Club (par 71/7,292 yards).
Led by a 2-under-par 69 from Christian Fanfelle and a pair of 70s from Michael Rome and Chad Sewell, the Roadrunners fired a 3-under 281 and finished in 10th place at 1-over 853 in their spring season opener. UTSA was one shot ahead of Loyola Marymount and three in front of UTEP in the 16-team field that included three top-20 teams.
Fanfelle's 69 was highlighted by an eagle on the 638-yard par-5 10th hole and a trio of birdies. The freshman from San Antonio finished in a tie for 55th at 4-over 217. He opened with a 76-72—148 on Monday before registering his first career sub-70 round on Tuesday.
Sewell wrote down five birdies en route to his final-round 70. The sophomore from Conroe opened with a 71 on Monday morning before posting the first of back-to-back 1-under scorecards, and he finished in a tie for 27th at 2-under 211 after leading the team in birdies with 14.
Sean Meehan also finished in a tie for 27th at 2-under 211. After opening with a 69-70—139 on Monday, the senior from San Antonio carded a 72 on the strength of 16 pars, and he led UTSA with 39 for the tournament.
Collin Clark joined Fanfelle in the tie for 55th at 4-over 217. The junior from Mansfield posted a 73 that featured three birdies as part of a 3-under 32 on the front nine a day after turning in a 74-70—144.
Michael Rome provided UTSA's other counting score on Tuesday with a 70 that was buoyed by five birdies, four on the front side en route to a 31. The sophomore from Austin finished in a tie for 68th with a 221 (76-75-70).
Arizona rallied to win the team title with a 37-under 815, followed by No. 11 Arizona State (818), Saint Mary's (831), 18th-ranked Texas A&M (832) and Iowa State (832) in the top five.
Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M captured the individual crown with a 19-under 194 (67-63-64).
Meanwhile, Will Adams and Adam House posted top-10 finishes in the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate at nearby Randolph Park Golf Club.
Adams registered a 5-under 211 on the 6,902-yard, par-72 layout in the individuals-only event. The freshman from Odessa Permian High School posted the second-lowest round and second-best 36-hole total in program history on Monday after firing a 65-70—135. Adams finished with a 76 on Tuesday and wrote down 14 birdies for the 54-hole tournament.
House finished in a tie for 10th at 3-under 213, a career-best 54-hole scorecard for the junior from Rockwall. After posting a 71-68—139 on Monday, he closed with a 74 for his second career top 10.
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Feb. 17-19 when they travel to Humble for the All-American Intercollegiate.
