Women's basketball falls at Monarchs on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to Old Dominion 72-47 on Saturday at the Ted Constant Center.
 
Charlotte Ellmore posted a career-high 11 points as the Roadrunners (6-13, 1-6) shot 30.8 percent from the field.
 
In the first quarter, the Monarchs (15-5, 6-2) immediately went on a 7-0 run, taking the lead and not looking back. Karrington Donald made a 3-pointer at the 7:31 mark to put UTSA on the board. At the end of the quarter, Donald led the team with seven points and the Roadrunners trailed 7-19.
 
UTSA scored 14 points in the second to close the gap, trailing by 10, 31-21 going into halftime. Tija Hawkins scored six points in the quarter going two for three from the field and two for two from the line.
 
Old Dominion posted 18 points in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field. At the 9:09 mark, Kourtney Kekec scored for UTSA to bridge the gap by eight, 31-23. Tija Hawkins and Evelyn Omemmah followed later on, scoring four more points for the Roadrunners. For 4:49, UTSA only scored four points off free throws from Karrington Donald and Tija Hawkins, until a Charlotte Ellmore made a layup with 53 seconds remaining. The Roadrunners trailed 49-31 going to the fourth.
 
In the fourth quarter, Ellmore made three 3-pointers as UTSA scored a total of 16 points. The freshman went three for four from the arc and posted three rebounds. The Roadrunners shot 31.3 percent from the field. The Monarchs scored 23 points while shooting 58.8 percent from the field to increase the gap and take the victory.
 
The Roadrunners return to action at home on Jan. 31 when they host WKU at 11 a.m. for the education game at the Convocation Center.
