Women's basketball drops 66-54 decision at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 66-54 decision to Charlotte Thursday evening at the Halton Arena.
 
Evelyn Omemmah posted a career-high 15 points as the Roadrunners (6-12, 1-5) shot 42.3 percent from the field, while the 49ers shot 39.3 percent.
 
UTSA scored first with a layup from Marie Benson. Charlotte went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-4 early on until the Roadrunners turned around and posted a 6-0 run to take the lead 12-11. A 3-pointer from Barbara Benson at the 1:44 mark garnered the lead again until the game was tied with 40 seconds remaining in the first. The Roadrunners trailed 15-17 going to the second.
 
Evelyn Omemmah made a layup at the 9:09 mark to tie the game at 17. The 49ers took a six-point lead with three back-to-back shots. A layup from Kourtney Kekec broke up the scoring, but Charlotte went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-point lead (35-23) into halftime.
 
Two shots from the Roadrunners in the beginning of the third quarter closed the gap to eight (35-27) until the 49ers scored their first points of the quarter at the 6:16 mark. Back-to-back shots from Karrington Donald brought UTSA within seven, but it wasn't enough as Charlotte continued to find the basket. The Roadrunners trailed 49-38 going to the fourth.
 
Charlotte Ellmore hit a 3-pointer at the 6:31 mark of the fourth quarter, which was followed by a shot from Tija Hawkins, closing the gap to six. The 49ers went on another 10-0 run, increasing the lead to 16 and taking the victory.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday at Old Dominion. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
