SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 59-42 decision to UAB Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (6-11, 1-4) shot 32.7 percent from the field, while UAB (17-2, 5-1) shot 34.9 percent.
In the first quarter, the Roadrunners and the Blazers were close, tying the game three times. UTSA and UAB were tied at 8-8 for 2:41 until the Blazers took the lead from a 3-pointer. UAB led 16-9 after the first.
UAB continued to find the basket in the second, scoring 15 points and leading 31-16 at the half.
Coming out of halftime, the Roadrunners turned it around, scoring 17 points in the third. The Roadrunners shot 50 percent from the field and Tija Hawkins led with eight points. A shot from Hawkins at the 4:55 mark brought the Roadrunners within seven (38-31), but the Blazers continued to find the basket and led 49-33 going to the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, only 19 points were scored between both teams. Marie Benson hit her sixth 3-pointer of the season as UTSA shot 33.3 percent from the arc.
Marie Benson posted her 11th double-double of the season, moving into second at UTSA for career double-doubles.
The Roadrunners return to action Jan. 24 at Charlotte. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
