Roadrunners defeated by Owls

HOUSTON – The UTSA women's basketball team dropped an 85-54 decision to Rice Thursday afternoon at the Tudor Fieldhouse.
 
UTSA falls to 5-9 overall and 0-2 on Conference USA action, while Rice improves to 12-3 and 3-0 in conference play.
 
In the first quarter, the Owls started the game off strong scoring six points in the first minute of the game, while Marie Benson and Tija Hawkins each posted five points for the Roadrunners as they shot 35.8 percent the field. UTSA trailed by 13, 28-15, going to the second.
 
Rice continued to score in the second quarter, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and increasing the lead over the Roadrunners. The Owls led 48-22 at the half.
 
Tija Hawkins and Marie Benson hit double digits in the third with 11 and 10 points, respectively as Rice went on a 6-0 run in the first half of the quarter to increase the gap by 35.
 
UTSA scored 21 points in the fourth and shot 53.3 percent from the field, but the Owls scored 15 to keep the lead.
 
Evelyn Omemmah made her Roadrunner-debut, posting 13 points and four rebounds for UTSA.
 
The Roadrunners return to action Saturday afternoon at North Texas. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
