UTSA softball opens spring break with C-USA series at FIU

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open Conference USA play this weekend with a three-game series at FIU. The Roadrunners (10-9) and the Panthers (13-12) will open the series with a 3 p.m. CT doubleheader on Saturday and close with a noon contest the following day.

UTSA is coming off a slim 1-0 loss to instate foe Texas on Wednesday evening. The Roadrunners played the Longhorns tight for five innings until Texas got on the board with a home run to left-center from Taylor Ellsworth to lead off the sixth inning. Overall, the Longhorns posted nine hits across seven innings. Junior Bailee Baldwin registered UTSA's only hit with a single to left center in the bottom of the sixth.

Baldwin continues to lead the team and C-USA with a .982 slugging percentage and 10 home runs. Just two shy of besting her 11 total from last season, Baldwin also ranks third in the nation in home runs and home runs per game.

Freshman Ashlynn Walls follows with a .537 slugging percentage and a .352 batting average. Starting in all 19 games for UTSA this season, the rookie has recorded 19 hits, including seven doubles. Overall, UTSA is batting .249 as a team with 117 hits, 69 runs and 65 RBI.

Senior Lizzy Fox has appeared in 12 of the team's 19 games as she paces the pitching staff with a 6-4 record and a 2.42 ERA. She also tops the squad with 25 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are coming off a 6-5 victory over the Niagara Purple Eagles in eight innings on Thursday. Overall, FIU enters the weekend 13-12 overall. Coastal Carolina transfer, Tatyana Forbes, paces the squad with a .370 at the plate.

With eight wins on the year, sophomore Shannon Saile has been the ace in the circle for the Panthers with 132 strikeouts in 89.1 innings of work.
