UTSA inks World Junior Championships bronze medalist to National Letter of Intent

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox announced Friday that Vera Chinedu, one of England's top youth sprinters, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Roadrunners beginning with the 2019-20 season.

A native of London, Chinedu is a two-time Great Britain youth national champion and was a bronze medalist with Great Britain's 4x100m relay team at the 2018 World Junior Championships in Finland. She won her country's U17 100 meters in 2016 and the U15 60m in 2014 and she owns personal bests of 7.50 in the 60m, 11.76 in the 100m and 24.39 in the 200m.

"We're very excited to add an accomplished sprinter in Vera Chinedu to our signing class," Fox said. "Throughout her career, she has proven time and time again that she is one of the best young sprinters in England, even on the international stage. There's no doubt she will have an immediate impact on our program."

Chinedu finished fifth in the 100m at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, Bahamas. She posted her 60m PR of 7.50 to claim runner-up honors at the 2017 Lee Valley South of England Championships and she clocked an 11.77 in the first round of the 100m at the Bedford England U23/U20 Championships, eventually finishing fifth in the final.

Chinedu is the sixth announced member of UTSA's 2019 signing class, as she joins men's signees Oquendo Bernard and Jack Turner and women's signees Ana Carolin Da Silva, Natasha Purchas and Zoie Reyna.
