ARLINGTON – Marie Benson hit her 500th career-rebound as the Roadrunners fell short to UT Arlington, 53-48 Thursday afternoon at the College Park Center.
UTSA (4-7) shot 37 percent from the field and posted 45 rebounds, while UTA (7-2) shot 32.3 percent from the field with 34 rebounds.
The Roadrunners shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first as UTSA and UTA stayed close in score. Tija Hawkins tied the game at 7 from two free throws with just over three minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Barbara Benson with three seconds left gave UTSA the lead, 10-8.
In the second quarter, the Roadrunners and the Mavericks continued to stay close until the 3:57 mark when UTA took a five-point lead, 17-12. A 3-pointer from Kourtney Kekec and a layup from Barbara Benson, tied the game back up at 17. UTSA and UTA went into halftime tied up at 19.
UTA took the lead in the third quarter, as the Mavericks shot 64.3 percent from the field. UTSA fought to break the lead, but it wasn't enough as UTA led by five (40-35) going to the fourth.
The Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 45 at the 3:56 mark. UTSA took the lead with 1:56 remaining off a layup from Marie Benson, who garnered a free throw from a foul on UTA. The Mavs took back the lead off a turnover and a foul with 52 seconds remaining.
UTSA returns to the court Dec. 30 when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
