SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team topped San Diego, 87-77 Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners improved to 4-6 on the season as they shot 52.2 percent from the field. San Diego (6-4) shot 43.8 percent from the field.
Four Roadrunners scored in the double digits. Marie Benson led with her fifth double-double of the season after scoring 22 points and collecting 14 rebounds, while Barbara Benson topped her career high with 19. Tija Hawkins and Karrington Donald also broke their career highs with 18 points each.
UTSA shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first quarter as it was leading 21-19 going to the second. Hawkins led the team with eight points, while Marie Benson followed with six points, three rebounds and two assists.
The game was tied at 24 at the 8:28 mark in the second quarter, but the Toreros took the lead off a 3-pointer. Marie Benson and Barbara Benson each had back-to-back shots as UTSA closed the gap and eventually reclaimed the lead. The Roadrunners led 45-42 at the half.

UTSA continued to lead USD into the third, but the Toreros closed in on the Roadrunners and ultimately tied the game at 58 with 3:08 remaining. Karrington Donald scored six points in the remainder of the third to take back the lead.
In the fourth quarter, UTSA shot just 33.3 percent from the field, but scored 11 points from free throws. Barbara Benson scored nine points in the fourth to help lead the Roadrunners to the victory.
UTSA returns to the court on Thursday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Arlington to play UT Arlington. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
