Women's hoops opens season with victory over Concordia Texas

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 78-51 victory over Concordia Texas Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center.
 
The Roadrunners shot 40.9 percent from the field and had a total of 54 rebounds.
 
Junior Marie Benson set a new career-best with 29 points, while garnering her first double-double of the season with 15 rebounds, tying her all-time record. 
 
UTSA started the first quarter a little slow, but it picked up with two minutes remaining and the Roadrunners took the lead off free throws from Marie Benson, followed by a jumper by Barbara Benson as they led 23-18 going into the second. 
 
Concordia scored just seven points in the second, coming from two players. UTSA went into halftime with a 44-25 lead, shooting 53.8 percent from the field.
 
The Roadrunners scored just 15 points in the third with Marie Benson and Tija Hawkins, each scoring four. The Tornados outscored UTSA by one point, 16-15, but it wasn't enough as the Birds entered the final quarter with a 59-41 advance.
 
Holding Concordia to 10 points in the fourth, UTSA finished the game with 19 points and eight rebounds in the final quarter.
 
UTSA returns to the court on Nov. 10 at the Seton Hall Tip-off where it will take on UMBC at 1:30 p.m. CT followed by Seton Hall on Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
