BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UAB registered more than 600 yards of offense and held UTSA to 220 in a 52-3 victory in Conference USA action on Saturday night at Legion Field.
The Blazers, 8-1 overall and on top of the C-USA West Division at 6-0, racked up 668 total yards, including 419 on the ground. They held the Roadrunners (3-6, 2-3 C-USA) to 84 rushing yards and 136 through the air.
Spencer Brown led UAB's ground game with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, while James Noble added 92 yards on 11 totes.
Tyler Johnston passed for 249 yards and three TDs on just 10 completions, three to Xavier Ubosi for a game-high 72 yards and two scores.
Greg Campbell Jr. led UTSA's offense with six catches for 62 yards, while Brenden Brady rushed for 42 yards on eight carries.
C.J. Levine paced the Roadrunners defense with 12 tackles, the third double-digit tackle game of the year for the senior safety. Meanwhile, linebackers Les Maruo and Josiah Tauaefa posted nine and eight stops, respectively, and Cassius Grady picked off his team-leading third pass of the fall.
UAB struck first when Johnston hit Kailon Carter on a 50-yard touchdown pass on the game's opening drive.
Johnston found Ubosi open in the corner of the end zone on a 22-yard TD pass midway through the first quarter to help push the Blazers lead to 14-0.
Jared Sackett got UTSA on the board with a 37-yard field goal with 5:24 left in the opening stanza. The sophomore Lou Groza Award semifinalist now is 14-of-17 on field goals this season.
UAB pushed its lead to 28-3 after a 50-yard dash by Andre Wilson late in the first quarter and a 31-yard touchdown pass from Johnston to Ubosi early in the second.
After a blocked punt gave the Blazers field position at the UTSA 4-yard line, Brown's TD plunge on the next play helped to increase the lead to 32.
A 51-yard field goal by Nick Vogel with a little less than six minutes left in the second provided the 38-3 halftime margin.
UAB tacked on a pair of scores in the second half on a 12-yard TD run by Brown in the third quarter and a 3-yard keeper by Johnston in the fourth.
The Roadrunners will return home for the first time in nearly a month to host FIU (6-3, 4-1 C-USA) on Saturday, Nov. 10. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the Alamodome and the game will air on ESPN+.
