SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women's basketball team defeated Sul Ross State 84-41 in an exhibition game Friday evening at the Convocation Center.
Three Roadrunners reached double figures with junior Marie Benson leading the team with a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Charlotte Ellmore followed with 12 points and Tija Hawkins with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
UTSA shot 50.9 percent from the field and outrebounded the Lobos 54-36.
The first quarter started slow, but picked up quickly after a three from Marie Benson. The Roadrunners lead 22-14 going into the second quarter.
UTSA kept Sul Ross State from scoring for over five minues in the second in an 18-point run to bring the lead to 40-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Roadrunners allowed the Lobos to score only one point off a free throw. They continued to outscore with a 66-23 lead going into the fourth.
The Roadrunners increased the margin to 46 with an 81-35 lead in the fourth, before allowing the Lobos to come back and score a few before the final buzzer.
Freshmen Ryann Stearns, Charlotte Ellmore and Mandi Cooks made their Roadrunner debut. Stearns earned a spot in the starting lineup her first time UTSA letters.
UTSA will officially open the 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Concordia Texas at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
