RUSTON, La. -- Juniors Montse Castro, Brianna McCulloch and Kara Teal helped fuel a four-set win (20-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17) for UTSA volleyball at Louisiana Tech, on Friday night.
UTSA (17-7, 9-3 Conference USA) snapped a two-game losing streak with the four-set result at Louisiana Tech (6-21, 1-11 C-USA). The Roadrunners fell in the first set to a mid-set run but took complete control of the match in the second, claiming three straight sets to post the win. After hitting .167 in the first set, UTSA settled in to hit .306 in the second, .235 in the third and .257 in the fourth as a team.
The Roadrunners, who entered the match a half game shy of second place in the league standings, have now won seven of their last nine matches.
Castro, a 6-foot-7 native of Mexico City, Mexico, had a career-high 11 kills on 19 attacks, adding two blocks. McCulloch had a team-high 12 kills with six digs, and Teal sported eight kills, four service aces and five blocks.
Freshmen Hannah Lopez and Kirby Smith helped power the offense with Smith owning eight kills and nine digs. Lopez finished with eight kills. Sophomore Hannah Froeschl had five kills.
UTSA senior setter Amanda Gonzales, a native of New Braunfels, Texas, had her eighth double-double of the year with 24 assists and 11 digs. Junior Emily Ramirez had four aces and eight digs with freshman setter Mia Perales owning 19 assists and four digs. Senior libero Shelby Williams charted a team-high 17 digs.
The Roadrunners wrap up their road regular-season schedule on Sunday at Middle Tennessee at 12 p.m. CT.
