SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team fell short to I-35 rival Texas State in a 68-60 loss Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (2-3) shot 72 percent from the free throw line as Marie Benson hit her second double-double of the season and her 15th of her career. Texas State (2-2) shot 45.3 percent from the field and now leads the series 34-33.
The Roadrunners were trailing 15-4 with 2:20 remaining in the first until a layup from Kourtney Kekec started an 8-0 run. Shots from Timea Toth, Marie Benson and freshman Charlotte Ellmore helped bring UTSA within three at the end of the first when they trailed 15-12.
UTSA and Texas State went back and forth making shots until the Bobcats took the lead to five with a score of 21-16. It wasn't until Ellmore made a 3-pointer to tie up the game at 21 with 6:07 remaining. The Roadrunners shot 53.8 percent from the field to trail by two (30-28) at the half.
Coming out of halftime, Ryann Stearns hit a 3-pointer to take the lead for the first time in the game. The Roadrunners and the Bobcats continued to each score points, but UTSA trailed until Kekec made both free throws with 4:04 remaining to tie the game at 38. The Roadrunners trailed by one going to the fourth.
A foul on Marie Benson brought the Roadrunners back into the lead 48-46 with 7:16 left on the clock. The Bobcats caught a lead and shot 72.7 percent from the field to take the victory.
The Roadrunners return to the court on Friday when they host IUPUI in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
