ESTERO, Fla. – South Dakota State's Mike Daum set the program's all-time scoring mark to lead the Jackrabbits to a 99-79 win over UTSA men's basketball, in the second round of the Gulf Coast Showcase, on Tuesday morning at the Hertz Arena.
UTSA (0-5) and South Dakota State (4-2) slugged it out for the majority of the first half in a high-scoring affair but a splendid shooting performance from the Jackrabbits separated the game before halftime, and a 12-0 run in the second stanza polished off the win.
SDSU shot 64 percent in the first half and finished the game shooting 60 percent (36-for-60), while holding UTSA to 37 percent from the field. SDSU was 13-of-25 from 3-point land, and owned a 44-29 advantage in rebounds and a 32-24 margin in points in the paint.
The Roadrunners were paced by sophomore guard Keaton Wallace, who had 21 points after a 23-point outing yesterday vs. Big West Conference power UC Irvine. Senior forward Nick Allen added 12 points and four rebounds. Atem Bior had 11 points and five boards, with Byron Frohnen owning seven points and seven boards.
The 2017-18 C-USA Freshman of the Year, Jhivvan Jackson played in his second game of the year after recovering from injury. Jackson had 10 points and two assists in 15 minutes.
Daum led all scorers with 41 points, a total which lifted the senior forward to the SDSU record for career points scored.
UTSA returns to action on Wednesday at 10 a.m. CT in a seventh-place game against the loser of Colorado State vs. FGCU.
Wallace kicked off the scoring in the game with a triple from the top of the arc. Frohnen got on the board with a hook shot just two minutes into the game and Allen splashed a triple from the corner to give UTSA an 8-5 lead heading into the under-16 minute timeout. With the shot clock winding down out of the timeout, Wallace drilled a 30-footer from the wing to put the Runners up 11-8. Frohnen notched a bucket in the paint after a spin move to put the Runners up 15-12. In transition, Allen sank a triple from the top of the arc for an 18-12 lead. Mitar Stanojevic notched the hoop and the harm in transition to take the lead to 20-12 at the under-12 timeout.
Jackson's triple gave UTSA a 23-18 lead and Allen was fouled on a basket in the paint to give the Runners a 25-20 lead. Daum then fueled a run for SDSU to even it at 25, with his 14th points of the first half giving SDSU a 27-25 lead. Atem Bior polished off a post move to even it at 27 but Skyler Flatten answered for SDSU to take a 30-27 lead. Jackson then found Bior on the block to cut the lead to 30-29 with just over seven minutes left in the first. After Daum stretched the lead to 36-31 with a pair from the charity stripe before a jumper from Bior and two from the free-throw line from Wallace cut the lead to 36-35. After Daum's jumper – which broke the all-time scoring record in SDSU history – gave the Jackrabbits a 38-37 lead, Frohnen connected on a lay-in to cut the lead to 38-37 at the under-four minute timeout. SDSU was able to notch 11 of the next 16 points to earn a 51-43 lead at the break.
SDSU opened the second half strong, taking a 54-44 lead after a quick minute of action. UTSA cut the lead to 58-51 with an old-fashioned three-point play out of the under-16 minute timeout but Daum answered with his third three to give the senior 27 points. The Jacks used a 10-0 run to take a 71-53 lead, including big baskets from Daum and Flatten, forcing a UTSA timeout. Daum took the lead to 20 with his 33rd points of the game at the under-12 minute timeout.
