Rome leads UTSA to 10th place at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate

CARROLLTON — Michael Rome tied for 29th place to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a tie for 10th at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, which concluded Tuesday at Maridoe Golf Club (par 70/7,008 yards) in Carrollton, Texas.
 
Rome carded a 221 to finish in a five-way tie for 28th at 11-over par. The sophomore from Austin opened up the 54-hole event with a 74 and followed that with a 73 and then his second 74 of the tournament. His final round that was highlighted by a trio of birdies as part of a 2-under 33 on the front nine.
 
Chad Sewell posted the Roadrunners' low final-round scorecard with a 2-over 72 that included birdies on the 440-yard, par-4 11th and 155-yard, par-3 14th. The sophomore from Conroe finished in a tie for 41st with a 224 (76-76-72).
 
Sean Meehan tied for 46th with a 226 (71-79-76), while Adam House and Collin Clark rounded out the UTSA lineup in 51st (76-72-79—227) and a tie for 72nd (75-85-79—239), respectively.
 
The Roadrunners tied with Kent State for 10th place in the field that featured eight nationally ranked teams, including three top-10 squads. UTSA carded an 897 (296-300-301) to finish four shots ahead of Conference USA foe Charlotte (901), 16 in front of Houston (913) and 21 better than Michigan (918).
 
Top-ranked Oklahoma State claimed the team title with a 13-under 827, followed by No. 34 NC State (859), No. 6 SMU (863), 16th-ranked Arkansas (867) and No. 4 Pepperdine (873) in the top five.
 
The Oklahoma State duo of Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff and Pepperdine's Clay Feagler finished in a three-way tie for individual medalist honors at 4-under 206.
 
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Jan. 28-29, 2019, when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Intercollegiate.
