UTSA Volleyball hosts FIU, FAU

SAN ANTONIO -- Winners of four of five matches to open Conference USA play, UTSA volleyball will return to action, hosting FIU (12-6, 4-1 C-USA) on Friday at 7 p.m. CT and FAU (13-4, 4-1 C-USA) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

The match on Friday vs. FIU will be held in conjunction with BestFest in front of the Convocation Center. The event will be held in the parking lot outside the Convocation Center and will includes games and fun for all ages. Student organizations will participate in BestFest, which includes a carnival atmosphere, complete with game booths and food venues. Sugar Ray, featuring Mark McGrath, will perform at 9 p.m. on Friday outside the Convo and fireworks will also be seen following the match on Friday. 
 
UTSA (12-5, 4-1 C-USA) has totaled 13.9 kills, 13.1 assists, 1.6 aces, 15.4 digs and 1.7 blocks per set as a team. UTSA has won five of its last six matches, including four-set wins over Virginia Tech, Southern Miss and UAB, a five-set thriller at UTEP and a three-set result vs. North Texas.
 
Junior Brianna McCulloch has averaged 3.03 kills per set in 2018, hitting .241 with 0.55 blocks per set. Junior Kara Teal has a .332 hitting percentage, owning 2.25 kills and 0.85 blocks per set. Freshman Kirby Smith has a team-high 3.30 kills per set – tops among C-USA freshmen – hitting .211 with 3.43 digs per set, also tops among C-USA freshmen. Freshman Hannah Lopez has averaged 3.11 kills and 2.04 digs per set, hitting .179. Sophomore Hannah Froeschl has averaged 2.25 kills per set, hitting .279. Senior Amanda Gonzales leads the team with 8.37 assists per set, with freshman Mia Perales owning 4.43 assists per set. Senior Shelby Williams leads the team with 4.09 digs per set.

FIU (12-6, 4-1 C-USA) have totaled 12.99 kills, 12.01 assists, 1.39 aces and 14.7 digs and 2.24 blocks per set as a team in 2018. Margherita Bianchin leads the team with 3.48 kills per set, hitting .267 with 2.31 digs per set. Lina Bernier has a team-high 5.18 digs per set, with Chelsea Hudson and Dorina Klinger each own per set marks of at least 0.90. Abbie Hughes leads the club with 8.88 assists per set.
 
FAU (14-4, 4-1 C-USA) is coming off a three-set sweep of Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, stretching its winning streak to four consecutive entering the weekend. FAU has totaled team per set averages of 15.3 kills, 14.5 assists, 1.9 aces, 14.4 digs and 1.8 blocks. Sigourney Kame has a team-high 3.84 kills per set, adding a .346 hitting percentage. Massiel Matos has averaged 3.77 kills and 2.21 digs per set. Alex Cardona leads the team with 3.77 digs per set, with Ivone Martinez sporting 12.82 assists per set. 

UTSA leads the all-time series with FIU, 6-0, including a 4-0 mark in games played in San Antonio. The Roadrunners lead the series with FAU, 7-0, including a 3-0 mark in games played at the Convocation Center.
