KNOXVILLE, Tenn. —Paced by a top-10 showing from Ana Gonzalez, the UTSA women's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship on Tuesday at Cherokee Country Club (par 71/5,900 yards).
The Roadrunners posted a 3-over-par 287 in the final round and finished the 54-hole tournament with an 884, good for a tie for fifth with Eastern Kentucky and host Tennessee.
Gonzalez registered her second straight top 10 at the event, as the sophomore tied for eighth place after carding a 4-over 217. After opening with a 3-under 68 on Monday morning, the Monterrey, Mexico, native bounced back from a 78 in the second round with an even-par 71 on Tuesday. Her final round featured four birdies, including three as part of a 2-under 33 on the front side. Gonzalez, the runner-up at last year's tournament with a school-record 205, wrote down a team-high 10 birdies and played the par fives at 4-under.
Julie Houston was just two strokes behind her teammate with a 219 to finish in a tie for 12th. The senior from Allen closed with her second 72 of the week on the strength of 15 pars and a birdie on the par-5 15th. Houston, the reigning Conference USA Champion, led the Roadrunners with 35 pars during the event to go along with eight birdies.
Madison Kidd tied for 31st with a 224 after matching Houston with a 72 in the final round. The junior from Lake Jackson opened with a 74 and a 78 on Monday before using three birdies on the back nine to help post her 1-over-par final 18.
Hannah Holzmann tied for 46th with a 227 (77-78-72), as she also fired a 72 on the final day, while Brooke Nolte rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 70th (80-75-80—235).
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Oct. 5-7 when they travel to Colorado for the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
