UTSA wins Lone Star Invitational title on Tuesday

SAN ANTONIO — Led by co-individual medalist Sean Meehan, the UTSA men's golf team won the Lone Star Invitational title on Tuesday at TPC San Antonio's AT&T Oaks Course (par 72/7,435 yards).

The Roadrunners posted their second straight 1-over-par 289 to hold off Arkansas State for their second team crown of the calendar year. UTSA finished the rain-shortened, 36-hole event at 2-over 578, two shots ahead of the Red Wolves (580) and 11 in front of Little Rock (589) in the 15-team field

"It's obviously great to win a tournament, but to win your own event is a special feeling," head coach John Knauer said after securing his fourth tournament victory at UTSA. "I'm really proud of the guys. They stayed focused and competed hard both days to come out on top. This is a fantastic way to start our season."

Meehan carded a 72 on Tuesday, including saving par after finding the water hazard on his final hole, the 591-yard, par-5 18th. The senior tied for individual medalist honors with Arkansas State's Zan Luka Stirn, as both finished at 4-under 140. Meehan, a San Antonio native, posted four birdies on the day and ended with a tournament-high 10 en route to his second win of 2018. He also was the top individual at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in April, helping lead the Roadrunners to that tournament title.

Chad Sewell and Collin Clark both fired team-low 70s on Tuesday to help UTSA maintain its lead from the opening day.

Sewell tied for eighth place with a 1-over 145 (75-70). The sophomore from Conroe wrote down four birdies during his final round and he led UTSA with 25 pars for the event.

Meanwhile, Clark also posted four birdies on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 10th at 2-over 146 (76-70). The junior from Mansfield had eight birdies during the tournament, the second-best total in the 84-man field.

Adam House tied for 26th with a 149 (72-77) and Michael Rome closed out the UTSA lineup in 44th (74-78—152).

Competing as an individual, Will Adams tied for 16th with a 147. The freshman from Odessa Permian High School had a pair of birdies as part of a final-round 72 on Tuesday.

Christian Fanfelle also entered as an individual and tied for 52nd (79-75—154).

The Roadrunners will return to action on Sept. 23-25 when they travel to Dallas for the Trinity Forest Invitational.
