SAN ANTONIO -- Winners of seven of nine matches to open the year, UTSA volleyball will kick off its home schedule with a 7 p.m. CT matchup with rival Texas State on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
UTSA (7-2) will be facing Texas State (5-5) for the second time to open the year after falling in four sets in San Marcos, Texas on Aug. 30 in the opener of TXST's Creeds & Crests Classic.
The Roadrunners are coming off a 2-1 record last week at the University of Houston's Flo Hyman Collegiate Classic, posting wins over Houston and HBU and falling in four sets vs. Cornell.
UTSA has totaled 13.5 kills, 12.9 assists, 14.6 digs and 1.7 aces per set to open the year. Last week, UTSA averaged 12.25 kills, 11.58 assists, 13 digs and 1.75 blocks per set in Houston.
Junior Brianna McCulloch leads the team with 3.83 kills per set, hitting .274, with junior Kara Teal owning 2.03 kills per set, a .319 hitting percentage and a team-best 0.91 blocks per set. Kirby Smith leads all C-USA freshmen in kills per set (3.13) and digs per set (3.67), while freshman Hannah Lopez has added 2.62 kills and 1.62 digs per set. Sophomore Hannah Froeschl has hit .261 with 2.43 kills per set. Senior Amanda Gonzales leads the team with 9.43 assists per set – fifth in the conference – and senior Shelby Williams paces UTSA with 3.83 digs per set and a league-leading 18 service aces.

The Bobcats are coming off a three-match weekend, besting Rice in five sets in Houston, before falling in three at No. 6 Texas. Texas State wrapped up the weekend with a four-set loss vs. No. 16 Kentucky. In the first meeting with UTSA, TXST dropped the first set, 25-17, before winning the final three.
