WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The UTSA volleyball team used strong outings from Brianna McCulloch, Kirby Smith and Amanda Gonzales to post a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-21, 25-8) over Quinnipiac, on Saturday afternoon at Army West Point.
UTSA (2-0) raced out to an early lead to post a first-set win, fought off a second-set charge from Quinnipiac (0-3) and cruised to a third-set clincher to open the year with a pair of wins. The Roadrunners opened 2018 with a four-set win over San Francisco on Friday night, winning the final three sets to top the Dons.
McCulloch had 15 kills, with Smith notching her first double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Gonzales, who had 52 assists on Friday, notched 38 helpers. Kara Teal finished with six kills and four blocks. Hannah Froeschl had five kills and four blocks. Shelby Williams added 10 digs.
The teams traded points to open the match until a 5-0 run allowed the Roadrunners to take a 7-2 lead, including a pair of kills from McCulloch. After UTSA expanded its lead to 16-8, Quinnipiac called timeout but the Roadrunners roared out to a double-digit lead after a kill from Froeschl. Montse Castro finished off the set with a kill in a 25-13 win.
UTSA and Quinnipiac traded the first 10 points of the second stanza before a 4-0 run allowed the Roadrunners to take a 9-5 lead behind a kill from Castro. Quinnipiac rallied to even up the set before taking its first lead at 15-14 and 16-15. The roadrunners raced back to take a 22-17 lead after Dominguez notched a service ace. Quinnipiac rallied to get within two before a timeout and two set-ending kills from Froeschl and McCulloch.
The first four points of the set were claimed by the Roadrunners, including kills from McCulloch and Teal, coming off service from Smith. UTSA then rushed out to a 14-3 lead, including back-to-back kills from Smith.
