NATCHITOCHES, La. – Katieann Lochte headed in a service from Brittany von Schneidau in the 67th minute, and UTSA held on for a 1-0 victory over Northwestern State in the season opener on Friday evening at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
The Roadrunners (1-0) capitalized on a foul early in the second half by the Lady Demons (0-1). It set up a free kick by von Schneidau, who put the ball in the middle of the box before Lochte guided it into the back of the net.
UTSA's defense took over the rest of way.
Northwestern State had two more chances on net, but both were stopped by Michelle Cole, including a header attempt in the 87th minute.
Cole finished with a match-high four saves.
UTSA, which made a winner of first-year head coach Derek Pittman in his debut, tallied 11 shots on the night, nine coming in the final 45 minutes of action. Lochte attempted two shots, including the decisive goal, while Dina Draguicevich came off the bench to take a pair.
The Roadrunners will continue their season-opening four-match road trip with a stop at I-35 rival Texas State on Sunday night. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex in San Marcos.
