SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA – UTSA men's basketball put on a dominate performance to defeat the Costa Rica U21 National Team by a 98-47 final on Wednesday. The game was the third and final of the Roadrunners' Foreign Tour to the Central American country.
Knox Hellums, who will sit out the season as a Division I transfer, opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and the Roadrunners never looked back en route to a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. UTSA then outscored the Costa Ricans 20-3 in the second quarter to take a 40-19 lead into the intermission.
UTSA scored 30 more points in the third quarter, which included impressive shooting from all areas of the floor, and led 70-33 after 30 minute of action.
The fourth quarter was opened by a trey from sophomore guard Keaton Wallace and UTSA continued to score seemingly at will as it rolled to the 98-47 final.
Hellums led four Roadrunners in double-figures with a game-high 27 points, including a 5 of 11 clip from three. Atem Bior, a junior college transfer, poured in 15, while Wallace and junior Mitar Stanojevic each finished with 13. Bior also collected 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the trip.
UTSA shot 45.0 percent for the game, knocking down 37 of 82 shots. Meanwhile the Roadrunners limited Costa Rica to 31.0 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded the homestanding nationals 51-38.
Costa Rica was led by Hilarion Grisville's 12-point effort and was complimented by Escoe Rufus' 11.
UTSA finishes its three games of the foreign tour with a 1-2 mark. The Roadrunners will spend the next two days exploring Costa Rica, including parts of the Rain Forest, before returning stateside on Saturday, Aug. 18.
