Riley closes career with second team All-America honors

EUGENE, Ore. – Adrian Riley became the first UTSA men's track & field student-athlete to earn All-America honors in two separate events as he garnered second team USTFCCCA All-America honors in the decathlon with his 12th place finish on Thursday at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Riley also earned honorable mention All-America honors in the long jump as a junior in 2017.

"I am very pleased with my performance," said Riley. "I knew going up against the top decathletes in the country was a tough challenge, but I found a way to finish strong and break the 7,500 point barrier.

"I've come a long way in my four years at UTSA. From a guy in coach [Arron] Fox's office asking for a tryout to an All-American is a very proud achievement. I now plan to finish my UTSA degree and focus on the long jump as I prepare for my future."

In addition to the becoming UTSA's first All-American in two events, the senior is also the first Roadrunner to earn multiple All-America honors since Keyunta Hayes earned honors in the 400m hurdles in each 2012, 2014 and 2015.

Riley started the second day of the decathlon with a 15.51 in the 110m hurdles, which was good for second in his heat and 12th overall, to earn 789 points. He then scored 720 points in the discus with a best hurl of 42.70m his third time in the throwing circle, which ranked seventh in the field. His first attempt of the discipline carried 41.95m and his second attempt 42.45m. In the javelin, Riley finished with a best distance of 53.81m, good for 645 points. He threw 48.65m on his first attempt and 49.02m on his second before tossing his best effort on his third and final attempt. The Kingston, Jamaica, native closed the decathlon with 604 points in the 1,500m after clocking a 4:52.51 for his 7,520-point total.

Riley opened the decathlon on Wednesday with a personal-best 10.82 in the 100m to place fifth overall and garner 901 points. In the long jump he totaled 1,038 points with a UTSA overall long jump record mark of 7.91m, which was good for third in the field. Riley leapt 7.78m on his first attempt, then 7.73m on his second before unleashing his record-setting performance. He totaled 625 points in the shot put with a best heave of 12.30m. He opened the discipline with his 12.30m heave before fouling on his second attempt and registering a 12.01m his final time in the ring. Riley then cleared 1.95m in the high jump for 758 points. He made it over 1.86m and 1.92m on his first attempt before clearing his final height of scoring height on his third attempt. In the final event of the first day, Riley clocked a 51.12 in the 400m dash to earn 764 points.
