SAN ANTONIO – UTSA head men's basketball coach Steve Henson has announced the addition of Knox Hellums as a member of the 2018 recruiting class. Hellums is an NCAA Division I transfer from Pepperdine University. He will sit out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer policies and have two seasons of eligibility starting with the 2019-20 campaign.
"Knox brings Division I experience and a beautiful shooting stroke to our program," said Henson, the reigning Conference Year USA Gene Bartow Coach of the. "He is known as a shooter, but he also has good quickness and rarely turns the ball over. We expect him to gel quickly with the program as our fast, free-flowing offensive style suits his game perfectly.
"His redshirt year will allow him to really focus on attacking more off the dribble and continue to add strength from our strength and conditioning program."

A native of Tomball, Texas, Hellums is a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard that averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in his 27 appearances off the bench as a sophomore at Pepperdine. He scored in double figures four times, including 13 each at Portland (Feb. 1) and at Saint Mary's (Feb. 22). He made a season-high three 3-pointers four times and totaled game highs of three rebounds and assists.
Hellums also averaged 4.5 points as a true freshman during the 2016-17 season. He played in 30 games with appearances in the Waves' starting five. He made 33 3-pointers during the season, connecting on 42.3 percent from long range. He also averaged 1.1 rebounds and 16.5 minutes per game, while also totaling a pair of double-figure scoring performances. His season-high in the points column came at Portland State (Nov. 27) has he totaled 19, which included a 5 of 7 mark from three. Hellums collected single-game highs of four rebounds, two steals and 31 minutes played.
In addition to his work on the court, Hellums is a two-time West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll "bronze" honoree and a 2017-18 WCC All-Academic honorable mention selection.
Hellums, the son of Mark and Tamalyn Hellums, prepped at Concordia Lutheran High School. He scored more than 1,500 points during his final two seasons of high school and was a finalist for the Guy V. Lewis Award, which is awarded to the top high school player in the Houston area. He averaged 19.6 points as a senior and made 107 3-pointers.
Hellums joins high school signees Adokiye Iyaye (guard / Oklahoma City, Okla. / Putnam City North HS) and Tamir Bynum (guard / Houston, Texas / Lamar HS) along with junior college transfer Atem Bior (guard / Brisbane, Australia / New Mexico Military Institute) as members of the 2018 recruiting class.
