UIW rallies past UTSA 4-3 in Tuesday matchup

SAN ANTONIO – Senior Lizzy Fox matched her season-high five strikeouts, but UIW limited UTSA (19-28) to just four hits in a 4-3 victory in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Junior Bailee Baldwin paced the home squad with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, while fellow junior Hailey Garza and sophomore Kylea Nix each tallied a hit. Nix's hit extended her to a three-game hitting streak.

The Cardinals (14-30) managed seven hits and scored four runs off Fox to secure their second win of the season in the crosstown showdown.

UIW led off the game with a single up the middle from Marcela Lopez, while the sophomore then moved to second on a walk, and scored on an RBI single from Nina Flores.

The Roadrunners struck back with a trio of runs in the home half of the first. Catcher's interference sent UTSA's leadoff hitter Celeste Loughman to first, while the sophomore stole second. Quick on her feet, Loughman ran home on a Baldwin single to center field.

With the game knotted 1-1, a Cardinal fielding error helped Baldwin cross the plate, while a Garza RBI single drove in freshman Ashlynn Walls to push UTSA to a 3-1 lead.

UTSA maintained its 3-1 advantage until the fourth inning when UIW struck for a pair of home runs to claim a 4-3 lead. Limiting the Roadrunners to one hit in the final three innings, UIW maintained its one-run lead for the win.

The Roadrunners stay at home this weekend as they host Florida Atlantic in their final Conference USA series of the regular season.
