Roadrunners drop doubleheader against Marshall

SAN ANTONIO - Junior Bailee Baldwin and freshman Ashlynn Walls delivered home runs in UTSA's fourth weekend of Conference USA action, but Marshall swept a doubleheader at UTSA on Saturday afternoon by scores of 3-0 and 4-2 at Roadrunner Field.
 
In the doubleheader, Baldwin slugged her team-leading 14th home run while Walls hammered out her second career long ball.
 
In the circle, senior Lizzy Fox and freshman Madison Nelson tossed complete games on the day as Fox recorded her 11th complete game of the season and Nelson notched her ninth.
 
Game 1: Marshall 3, UTSA 0
With three scoreless frames to open the day's doubleheader, Marshall was able to take a 2-0 lead on the Roadrunners in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run.
 
The Herd tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth as a trio of singles guided Elise D'Orazio around the bases. Following the run, Fox (9-7) went the distance in the circle, limiting Marshall to just seven batters over the last two innings. However, UTSA could do no further damage as Marshall claimed the opening game, 3-0.
 
Baldwin and freshman Celeste Borza recorded UTSA's two hits of the game in the first and fifth frames, respectively.
 
Game 2: Marshall 4, UTSA 2
UTSA got on the board in the bottom of the third with a home run over the right field fence from Walls. Marshall answered with a run in the top of the fourth frame with an RBI double.
 
Both teams added a run in the fifth inning to keep the game tied, this time at two runs apiece. Marshall led off with an RBI single up the middle while UTSA capitalized off Baldwin's 14th home run of the season,
 
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, but Marshall scratched for two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and eventually the win.
 
With two runners on, Aly Harrel doubled up the middle to score two runs and give the visitor side a 4-2 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, four UTSA batters made plate appearances but none were able to find the equalizer.
 
The teams will complete the three-game series with a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday.
