Late run costly in UTSA softball’s 1-0 loss at Texas

AUSTIN – Texas plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie as the Longhorns defeated UTSA, 1-0, in a nonconference contest Wednesday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field.

The Roadrunners (15-16) stranded four runners on base over the course of the game, none more crucial than when the team had runners on first and second in in the top of the seventh inning, looking to break the silence and take the lead.

In the bottom of the final frame, Texas led off with a double to right field followed by back-to-back outs. With one runner on and two outs, the Longhorns used an RBI single from Ki'Audra Hayter to plate the winning run.

Pitcher Lizzy Fox (9-6) would be tagged with the tough loss as the only Texas run came in the very last play of the game. The senior hurler struck out two batters and only walked one throughout the contest.

Celeste Loughman, Ashlynn Walls, and Hailey Garza accounted for UTSA's three hits in the game. Texas finished the game with four hits.

Texas's Paige Von Sprecken (8-5) struck out seven in earning the win over the Roadrunners, scattering UTSA's three hits and holding on when the Roadrunners threatened late in the contest.

UTSA returns home to open a three-game series against Marshall, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
