Middle Tennessee uses big innings to down UTSA on Friday night

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and three more a frame later en route to a 12-5 victory over UTSA in the Conference USA series opener on Friday evening at Reese Smith Jr. Field.

The Blue Raiders (22-20-1, 7-11-1 C-USA), who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Roadrunners (22-18, 9-9 C-USA), racked up 14 hits in the win.

UTSA trailed 10-2 in the seventh before Chris Estrada belted a three-run homer over the wall in left field. The senior infielder finished with three hits.

Middle Tennessee also added solo runs in the seventh and eighth panels.

The Roadrunners, who tallied nine hits, stranded 11 runners on the basepaths, including five in the first two innings.

Jake Myrick (2-3) picked up the win after allowing only two runs and striking out seven in 5.1 innings. The left-hander scattered five hits and worked around six walks.

The second game of the series will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday.
