SAN MARCOS - Conference USA home run leader Bailee Baldwin notched her 17th long ball of the season, but No. 21 Texas State scored four runs in the second to pull ahead and top the Roadrunners, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The Bobcats improve to 36-10 overall, while the Roadrunners fall to 18-25. UTSA will continue nonconference action with a Wednesday matchup against Incarnate Word at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the game set to honor the men and women of the United States military. All active and retired military will receive free admission to the game.
In addition to her home run, Baldwin delivered a single to pace the Roadrunners with two hits, while freshman Celeste Borza and sophomore Kylea Nix each tallied a hit.
Hitting her 17th long ball of the season in the top of the third, Baldwin is tied with former Roadrunner Jessica Rogers for ninth most home runs in a single season in UTSA program history. She is six round-trippers away from tying Rogers, who also holds the top single-season record with her 23 home runs in 2005.
Meanwhile, Texas State totaled 10 hits, fueled by a trio of Bobcats with two hits apiece.
In the circle UTSA saw appearances from freshman Madison Nelson and senior Lizzy Fox. Madison earned the loss as she pitched the opening 1.2 innings and allowed five runs with no walks. Pitching in relief, Fox blanked the Bobcats for the remaining 4.1 innings.
Texas State's defense was guided by pitchers Mckenna Fryar and Meagan Fox, who combined for seven strikeouts and one walk over seven innings.
The Bobcats opened the game with a double to right field and a single to center field for a quick 1-0 lead. The advantage extended to 5-0 in the bottom of the second on a pair of singles, a triple and a sacrifice bunt.
UTSA battled back with Baldwin's home run in the top of the third, but a strong Bobcat defense kept the Roadrunners at bay for the remainder of the game.
