Five event wins highlight UTSA’s day at J. Fred Duckett Twilight

HOUSTON, Texas – UTSA outdoor track & field competed at the 15th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston on Saturday and claimed a total of five event titles and 21 top-five finishes.
 
Winning individual event crowns were Kelsey Benoit (men's discus), Mia Hicks (women's discus), N'Dia Warren-Jacques (women's shot put), Patrick Prince (men's 110m hurdles), Luca Chatham (men's 800m).
 

Throws
Kelsey Benoit won the first event of the day, taking the discus with a personal-record throw of 51.86m. The senior unleashed his event-winning hurl on his fifth attempt of the day. Derek Fenton made it a 1-2 finish for the Roadrunners in the event as he placed second with a final best distance of 49.86m.
 
Mia Hicks made it a UTSA sweep of the discus as she won the women's event with a toss of 48.66m. Maia Campbell placed 12th with a distance of 39.57m and Lacee Barnes 17th (36.91m).
 
In the women's hammer throw, Mia Hicks claimed a podium finish with a distance of 51.39m to claim third in the 24-competitor field. Vincent Perez placed seventh in the men's hammer with a 53.24m on his sixth and final attempt of the day.
 
N'Dia Warren-Jacques earned UTSA's third throws win of the day with her top flight showing in the shot put. The senior finished her time in the circle with a throw of 14.32m to win the gold. Campbell placed fourth with a toss of 13.89m, Brenttany Birdow 10th with a 12.24 and Cynthia Gonzales 17th with at 12.24m.
 
Benoit took second in the men's shot put with a 16.67m fourth throw. Fenton placed eighth in the event with a 15.67m toss and Mike Zuniga 10th after a throw of 15.07m.
 
Jumps
Caroline Bellows tied for seventh in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.38m on her opening effort. Kyle Real was UTSA's top male pole vaulter as he vaulted 4.63m to place seventh. Karney Linch vaulted 4.48m to placed eighth, Alex Tyra and Alex Brock finished 11-12 with heights of 4.33m.
 
Andre Douglas came away second in the men's triple jump after a leap of 14.58m on his third attempt. Danielle Spence placed third in the women's triple jump with a cleared distance of 12.42m.
 
Ariel Watson placed ninth in the women's long jump after a launch of 5.64m, while Chase Whiting clearer 5.07m to placed 23rd.
 
In the men's high jump, Quillan Haughton cleared 2.08m to place second and Chandler Iturraga 1.93m to place eighth. Gabriyella Torres placed 10th in the women's high jump after clearing 1.59m.
 
Sprints
Jaren Colbert ran a 10.92 in the men's 100m dash to place ninth. He UTSA in the event as Jahkwan Blackley ran an 11.00 and Jayden Bunting an 11.22 to place 11th and 18th, respectively.
 
Ariel Watson was UTSA's lone entrant in the women's 200m dash as the freshman ran a 25.27 to place 13th. In the men's 200m dash senior Byron Taylor led four Roadrunners as he clocked a 21.74 to place ninth. Jaren Colbert (15th) ran a 22.26, Jared Taylor (19th) a 22.46 and Jayden Bunting (24th) a 22.63.
 
Jennifer Arinze and Darionne Gibson placed second and sixth, respectively, in the women's 400m. Arinze stopped the clock in 55.01 and Gibson in 56.58. Vasha Sheriff was UTSA's top male 400m entrant, crossing the line in 47.63. Austin Crocker ran a 49.30 to place 13th, while Chris Rosales (23rd) ran a 50.65 and Devall Harris (31st) a 51.79.

Hurdles
Patrick Prince won his fourth 110m hurdles title of the season as the junior clocked a 14.04 to win by 0.48 of second. In the women's 100m hurdles, Victoria Rausch placed second as she clocked a 14.40, Jamiah Jackson ran a 14.41 to place fourth and Chase Whiting a personal-best 15.23 to placed 11th.
 
UTSA saw four men's 400m hurdles place in the event's top-10. Andrew Pirog led the way in third with a personal-best 53.66. Ricardo Ramos ran a 55.95 to place sixth, while Jonathan Boozer and Justin Gerbrecht ran time of 56.11 and 56.54, respectively, to cross the line in seventh and ninth.  Jackson led four Roadrunners in the women's 400m hurdles as she placed fourth with a personal-best time of 1:02.30. Christy Gilbert and Sierra Andres were moments behind Jackson in fifth and sixth. Gilbert ran a 1:02.39 and Andres a 1:02.93. Rachael Grossman placed 12th, clocking a 1:04.66.

Mid-Distance
Luca Chatham won the men's 800m as he completed the two circuits around the track in 1:51.59. Zack Kovar placed 13th with a PR of 1:53.90. Caleb Devereaux crossed the line in 1:54.96 and Skye Knight in 1:58.07 to place 15th and 23rd, respectively.
 
Leading the way for UTSA in the women's 800m was sophomore Lynette in third after covering the distance in 2:14.93. Stephanie Sauceda was fifth after a 2:27.90 and Colleen Gilbert eighth with a 2:21.28. Jayela Slack rounded out the Roadrunners' contingent in 11th, clocking a 2:21.73.
 
Each of UTSA's 1,500m entrants turned in a personal-best. Marcus Guajardo ran a 4:02.7 in the men's race to place 10th, while Rian Rodriguez placed 28th and Sarah Estrada 32nd in the women's race. Rodriguez ran a 5:06.81 and Estrada clocked a 5:11.16.
 
Distance
John von Dohlen ran a PR of 9:42.52 to place 10th in the men's 3,000m steeplechase, while Peter Sepulveda crossed the finish line in a personal-best 9:45.74 to placed 13th. Emily Voss came across ninth in the women's 3,000m steeplechase after running an 11:36.38. Olivia Flores placed 13th in the event with a PR time of 11:57.62.
 
Gabby Gonzales ran a personal-best 18:13.66 to place fifth in the women's 5,000m run. Martin Luevano ran a 16:02.73 in the men's 5,000m to place 25th.
 
Up next
UTSA is scheduled to compete next Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28 at the Bobcat Classic. The Texas State-hosted event will serve as the Roadrunners' final tune-up before the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 10-13).
