Riley and Voss claim event win at day one of the Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas – Adrian Riley and Emily Voss captured event titles in the men's long jump and women's 3,000m steeplechase, respectively, to pace UTSA's efforts at the Texas Invitational on Friday.
 
Throws
Vincent Perez opened UTSA's day in the throws with a 10th-place finish in the men's hammer. Perez, a junior from San Antonio, finished with a best distance of 54.88m on his third and final attempt of the day.
 
Senior Kelsey Benoit took eighth in the men's shot put with a best distance of 16.71m. Mike Zuniga, a sophomore from Rio Hondo, placed 20th in the with a hurl of 13.82m on his third attempt.
 
Sophomore Maia Campbell led the Roadrunners in the women's shot put with a fourth-place showing. The Converse native unleashed a best personal-best throw of 14.60m on her sixth and final time in the ring. The mark ranks fifth on the UTSA all-time list.
 
Jumps
Caroline Bellows and Britton Chapman competed in the women's pole vault, placing fifth (tied) and ninth (tied), respectively. Bellows' cleared 3.50m, which was 0.05m short of her career-best, while Chapman made it over the bar at 3.35m.
 
Senior Adrian Riley won UTSA's first event of the meet with 7.75m leap in the men's long jump. Riley, a Jamaican, achieved his gold medal distance on his third leap of the day. Jahkwan Blackley placed 16th in the event with a 6.84m distance and Jake McDaniel 18th after a jump of 6.65m.
 
Gabriyella Torres led the Roadrunners in the women's long jump, placing seventh with a personal-best leap of 5.72m on her fifth attempt of the day. Ariel Watson placed 17th in the event with a career-best leap of 5.43m and Chase Whiting came away 21st with a distance of 4.94m.
 
Sprints
Olivia Esemena turned in a personal-best 24.61 to place 27th in the women's 200m dash and De'Stini Henderson ran a 24.70 to place 30th in the 42-competitor field.
 
The men's 200m saw Byron Taylor led five Roadrunners with a 21.55 to place 27th in the 56-competitor field. Jaren Colbert placed 36th with a PR of 21.85, Jahkwan Blackley 41st with a 21.95, Kaleb Campbell 46th with a PR of 22.18 and Jayden Bunting 51st with a 22.48.
 
Mid-Distance
Luca Chatham, a junior, was UTSA's lone competitor in the 800m invitational, placing sixth. The Dallas native clocked a 1:50.61, which was only 0.13 second shy of his personal-best.
 
In the women's 1,500m run Lynette Amaram led five UTSA student-athletes with a time of 4:55.73 to place sixth. Colleen Gilbert placed seventh, stopping the clock in 4:56.66. She was followed by Stephanie Sauceda (5:06.54) in eighth, Rian Rodriguez (5:09.71) in ninth and Sarah Estrada (5:22.14) in 11th.
 
Marcus Guajardo placed 19th in the men's 1,500m run, clocking a 4:13.08. Skye Knight was seconds behind in 20th with a time of 4:20.57.
 
Distance
UTSA took two podium finishes in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with Emily Voss and Olivia Flores placing first and second, respectively. Voss, a junior from Katy, ran a 12:08.68 to win the event, while Flores, a sophomore from Del Rio, made her 3,000m steeplechase debut with a 12:14.46 to place second.
 
In the men's 3,000m steeplechase Peter Sepulveda placed third with a personal-best time of 9:59.42 and John von Dohlen finished fourth in his event debut after stopping the clock in 10:06.38.
 
The Texas Invitational continues Saturday (April 14) starting at 10 a.m. with the women's 5,000m run. The track events will continue into the 3 p.m. hour and will wrap with the men's 4x400m relay. The men's discus scheduled for 10:30 a.m. is Saturday's first field event. The field events conclude in the 2 p.m. hour with the women's high jump.
