BOCA RATON, Fla. – UTSA scored two runs in the ninth inning, but No. 26 Florida Atlantic cut down the tying run at the plate to clinch a 3-2 victory in the second game of a Conference USA series on Saturday at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (17-16, 6-7 C-USA) trailed 3-0 entering the final panel.
After a pair of batters reached base, the league-leading Owls (26-8, 11-3 C-USA) committed an error that allowed one runner to cross the plate. Ryan Stacy then laced a double to the gap in right-center, plating Logan Swofford. Bryan Arias then was waved around, but FAU shortstop Tyler Frank's relay throw made it to the plate in time for catcher Pedro Pages to apply the tag and end the game.
Steven Dressler (4-2) was saddled with the loss despite logging a quality start. The left-handed yielded two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings.
Vince Coletti (2-2) hurled eight scoreless stanzas to pick up the victory. Zach Schneider collected his 11th save of the year as the rally was thwarted.
Both teams finished with eight hits.
Chris Estrada paced UTSA with a 3 for 4 performance. Stacy finished 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI.
The series finale has been moved up one hour and will start at 10 a.m. (CT) Sunday.
