Fenton's shot put win leads Roadrunners in day one of the UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Derek Fenton led the UTSA charge with a winning effort in the shot put in the opening day of the UTSA Invitational, contested at the Roadrunners' Park West Athletics Complex on Friday.
 
The Roadrunners men stand second on the team leaderboard with 32 team points, trailing leader Texas Tech by three points. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is third with 31 tallies. The UTSA women are fourth in the team standings with 21 points. Purdue leads the women's standings with 52 markers.
 
Fenton opened the meet with his shot put victory. The junior hurled his winning 17.28m mark on his third attempt of the day to best Eric Kicinski of Texas Tech and claim the 10 team points. Mike Zuniga also scored in the event, placing eighth with a distance of 13.96m. The women's shot put saw five Roadrunners compete with three scoring team points. Maia Campbell came home fifth with a distance of 13.97m, N'Dia Warren-Jacques (13.64m) sixth, Lacee Barnes (13.26m) seventh, Cynthia Gonzales (12.37m) ninth and Brittany Birdow (10.28m) 12th.
 
Hicks led six Roadrunners in the women's hammer with a sixth-place showing after a final distance of 51.94m. Vincent Perez finished second in the men's hammer with a distance of 53.43m, while his brother and UTSA alum Victor Perez, who competed unattached, broke the meet and facility record with a hurl of 66.42m.
 
Adrian Riley was UTSA's top finisher in the men's javelin, placing fifth with a heave of 51.89m. Sophomore Jake McDaniel placed eighth in the event with a best distance of 47.15m. Gabriyella Torres led the UTSA women in the javelin with fourth-place effort of 37.98m and Chase Whiting placed sixth after a throw of 32.16m.
 
On the track Peter Sepulveda (10:29.06) finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase to claim eight team points and move the UTSA men into first.
 
In the women's 5,000m Yulisa Abundis crossed the line in 18:12.30 to place eighth and earn a team point. Gabby Gonzales placed 11th with a 19:18.48 and Emily Voss 12th in 20:16.60.
 
The UTSA Invitational continues Saturday (March 17) with the field event starting at 11 a.m. and the track events commencing at 2 p.m. with a rolling schedule.
