Annual Strike out Cancer Day in honor of Hope Ortiz to take place on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — Saturday's doubleheader against North Texas will serve as the UTSA softball program's annual Strike Out Cancer Day in honor of former Roadrunner pitcher Hope Ortiz.

Ortiz was a three-year letterwinner for the Roadrunners' back-to-back-to-back Southland Conference Regular Season Championship teams from 2004-06. The right-hander from Odem High posted a 6-1 record, 3.02 ERA — which ranks eighth on UTSA's all-time list — 34 strikeouts and two saves in 28 career appearances.

As a senior in 2006, Ortiz registered a 2-0 record, 2.58 ERA and 14 strikeouts in helping UTSA to a 37-14 record and their second Southland Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons.

The Ortiz family will be honored before the first game (12:50 p.m.) while a silent auction will be held during the games with all proceeds going toward Leukemia and Lymphoma Research.
