SAN MARCOS – Texas State broke a 2-2 tie with three runs, including two unearned, in the seventh inning to pull away for a 5-2 win over UTSA on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
The three-run frame included a run-scoring single by Luke Sherley that put the Bobcats (10-4-1) ahead for good. After a wild pitch allowed Jaylen Hubbard to score, Sherley stole home as Roadrunner reliever Derek Craft was coming set on the mound.
Andre Shewcraft (0-2) took the loss for UTSA (7-8) after allowing two runs (one earned) in the decisive panel.
Seth Jordan (1-1) picked up the win in relief, as the left-hander worked one scoreless stanza. Cam Baird came on to pitch the ninth and collect his second save of the season.
The Bobcats took the early advantage with two runs in the opening inning, including a solo home run by Derek Scheible.
The Roadrunners broke through in the third inning.
After Bryan Arias tripled off the wall in left-center field, Trent Bowles hit a sharp single through the right side of the infield that sent him plateward. Ryan Stacy, who was hit by a pitch in the frame, tied up the game after scoring from second on Tony Beam's chopper that hit off the third baseman's glove.
The two teams went scoreless until the seventh when Texas State plated the three runs to take the lead.
Ryan Stacy finished with two of UTSA's six hits, including an eighth-inning double. Beam and Bowles each collected a hit and drove in a run.
The Roadrunners will continue their road trip this weekend as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to open Conference USA action against No. 15 Southern Miss. First pitch of the three-game series is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Pete Taylor Park.
