Texas State defeats UTSA, 7-1

SAN ANTONIO – Texas State scored seven runs in the fifth inning to help surge the Bobcats to a 7-1 victory against UTSA on Wednesday evening at Roadrunner Field.

Texas State, which is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll, improved to 12-4 while UTSA fell to 7-6.

The Roadrunners will round out the week with a trip to Lubbock, Texas to complete in Texas Tech's Jeanne Mchaney Memorial Classic, March 2-4.

Freshman Ashlynn Walls used her third RBI of the season to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 edge in first inning. But in the fifth inning, the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out on three singles. A UTSA fielding error sparked the scoring spree, helping Texas State score a pair of runs. Overall, the Bobcats put up seven runs on three hits and three UTSA errors in the fifth frame.

The Roadrunners halted the Bobcat run, keeping Texas State scoreless for the last two innings but would not find the equalizer.

Walls finished 3-for-3 at the plate while freshman Victoria Villarreal, sophomores Celeste Loughman and Kylea Nix, and junior Hailey Garza each tallied hits. In the circle, senior Lizzy Fox threw 4.1 innings with a trio of strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Madison Nelson pitched the last 2.2 innings to collect one strikeout and one walk.
