SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's tennis team will travel to Corpus Christi this weekend to compete at the 52nd annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions. The two-day event is scheduled to get underway Friday morning.
The Roadrunners (5-5) will open the event against Louisiana-Lafayette (11-6) at 10 a.m. Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The winner will advance to face either DePaul (10-3) or New Mexico State (6-3) at 5 p.m. Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, while the losing teams also will face off at 5 p.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
The other side of the bracket features South Alabama (4-4) vs. UTRGV (4-5) and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-1) vs. Troy (1-5). The championship match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Each team is guaranteed three matches in the tournament.
UTSA is looking to add to its three-match winning streak. The Birds have logged back-to-back wins over Prairie View A&M and a 5-2 triumph against Incarnate Word during the streak.
Kai Breitbach owns a team-best 7-2 record in singles action, while he and Gabriel Bugiga are 3-0 as a doubles team. Igor Cantanhede and Joao Ceolin also have paired up for a perfect 3-0 mark on the doubles courts.
At last year's H-E-B Tournament of Champions, the Roadrunners won the seventh-place match with a 4-2 victory over UTRGV.
