UTSA adds trio to 2018 signing class on Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head football coach Frank Wilson announced Wednesday that Deven Boston (Buena Park, Calif./Santa Ana College), Brenden Brady (Cibolo, Texas/Steele HS) and Cordale Grundy (Tulsa, Okla./Northeastern Oklahoma A&M) have signed National Letters of Intent. The trio joins the 19 players that inked on Dec. 20 to give UTSA a total of 22 for the 2018 signing class.

"Overall, when you look at the addition of these three signees, it adds value to a signing class that is very specific to the needs of this team," Wilson said. "This is our best class yet and we're excited about getting all of these young men on campus.

"Deven Boston is an experienced back that brings maturity, size and stature to the running back position. He has the ability to finish runs and to pick up those critical yards in crunch situations, so we're excited with what he brings to the table. We're looking forward to him coming in and adding to the competition at that position.

"Brenden Brady is a very talented and extremely bright young man from right here in San Antonio. He is everything we want in the future of this program. He's an every-down back with a great repertoire as a ball carrier and receiver. We're looking forward to him contributing in the run and pass game, as well as special teams.

"Cordale Grundy brings to us another piece in our quarterback room, which allows us to continue to create competition at a position that's up for grabs and pivotal to our success. He was a very productive junior college quarterback who we anticipate being able to come in and compete and allow us to become better at that position."

Seven of the signees — Lorenzo Dantzler, Jalyn Galmore, Cordale Grundy, T.J. King, Andrew McGowan, Tykee Ogle-Kellogg, Treyvion Shannon — already are enrolled in classes this spring at UTSA.

The class boasts UTSA's first-ever four-star signee in offensive linemen Spencer Burford of San Antonio Wagner High School and 17 three-star players.

UTSA's group of 22 signees boasts a near-even breakdown of players on each side of the ball, with 11 projected as offensive players, 10 pegged to contribute on defense and one who is listed on both sides of the line.

"This class shows great balance between offense and defense and also in managing our roster," Wilson said. "When you look at our need positions, I thought they were met with this class."

Sixteen of the signees come from the high school ranks, while six are joining the Roadrunners from junior colleges.

The class includes 14 players from the state of Texas, four from Mississippi and one each from California, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Among the players from the Lone Star State, six hail from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, three are from Greater San Antonio and a pair calls the Austin metro area home. UTSA also signed a player each from the Greater Houston Area, Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

"When you look at where we recruited, 14 of the signees are from the great state of Texas," Wilson said. "It's important to us to recruit well in our city and in our state. We like the geographical areas where these young men come from. We think it bodes well for our university and our program in championing these young men who are deserving of an opportunity to play Division I football at a high level."
