SAN ANTONIO – Sonia Madroñal outlasted Alejandra Landaluce in a three-set battle at No. 6 singles to clinch a 4-3 victory for UTSA over Incarnate Word on Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Courts
Madroñal won the opening frame, 7-6. She lost the second set but rebounded to claim the final panel, 6-4, and secured a one-point victory for the Roadrunners (3-1) over their cross-town foe.
UTSA started the match with a win in doubles competition, earning victories at the second and third positions.
Laura Cabrera continued her perfect start on the singles court, as she collected a 6-0, 6-0 win against Alejandra Tamayo at the fifth spot.
The Cardinals (0-2) picked up points at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles.
Charleen Tiwari gave the Roadrunners their third tally at the third position. Tiwari picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win to improve to 3-1 in singles play this spring.
Meanwhile, it set up the finale and Madroñal's heroics.
UTSA will return to action next Sunday, as the Roadrunners continue their road trip with a stop at UTRGV. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Edinburg.
